Citizenship For Sale. It’s being termed “Maternity Tourism”.
The New York Times published a story revealing a twist on the same-ol, same-ol – Anchor Baby Scam.
It seems a “business” in San Gabriel, Ca. was discovered offering pregnant foreigners – women, of course, a way to have their children born in the U.S. thereby becoming immediate parents of American citizens …… babies!
The babies are automatically citizens when their births are registered in the U.S., thanks to the 14th Amendment. The business was evidently charging thousands of dollars a pop to women who stayed there … supposedly as tourists but “just happened to have their babies here”!
Police after responding to a number of complaints found the new twist of the old “anchor baby” scam and shut down the business, sending the women with newborns, to a local motel instead. Most all these women were Chinese, but the question remains as to whether this is a new type business, as others are being discovered all across the nation.
