If you know Eugene, you know who Steve Prefontaine is!
But what few are told, . . . is how he died!
That’s one thing, never spoken of here. In a crowd, it’s just “bad form” to even mention the fact.
After all, … he’s Eugene’s hero … he’s part of the U of O’s (Oregon’s) claim to fame … he’s a major part of what made Eugene, “Track City USA”.
It’s part of why, though Eugene is flat broke and still spending money like a drunken sailor, they continue to spend way too much money promoting the city’s image – they still promote Pre … they can’t face the truth – they just don’t acknowledge that he got drunk and crashed his car on a hill above the University …. and died.
Think maybe if he’d killed someone else, it’d be different? Naw …. Steve IS Eugene …, a “progressive city” with it’s head permanently buried in the Sand!
