San Onofre is older than Japan's oldest!
Incompetent Legislators, on the House of Representative’s Energy committee, are on TV telling the US public that our nuclear generators are safe. I suppose there’s the chance that they’re more ignorant than lying ……
“Japan’s nuclear generator that failed, was 40 years old”, they say.
A lie of omission: San Onofre is older! Though I knew when writing this about the age of the San Onofre generator was older, now I find out that many more of our U.S. nuclear generating plants are older than Fukushima’s plant, now we find out that 23 of our generators are exact duplicates of that station.
Another one of their lies is that our nuclear generator plants are built strong enough to withstand the coming earthquakes! They’re not! See this article where they brag that San Onofre will withstand a 7.0 quake! Japan’s quake has been shown to be a 9.0!
They also point out that Japan sits on top of the Ring of Fire.
Another lie of omission. So do we! California, Oregon, Washington, B.C., and Alaska!
They also never mention that San Onofre sits between a freeway and the ocean making it a perfect target for terrorists!
The Pacific Northwest is the most locked up place in the world – we await an earthquake in the same or larger magnitude range as Japan!
The Pacific Northwest sits on top of the Casciadia Subduction Zone! It’s similar to Japan and Chile, the sites of the largest earthquakes on record.
We’re 11 years into the window of an 8.0 to a 9.5 quake! Our saving grace here in Oregon is that there are no nuclear generators here – ZERO!
Another complication for the nuclear generators is that they all sit alongside sources to cool the plant in emergencies – water. They assure us, but our plants are just not built to withstand a large quake as Japan had! The housing for the nuclear core may but …..
If the cooling systems and their back-ups fail, the results will be devastating! Guess what! Most all our nuclear generators sit atop fault lines. It’s no coincidence that Rivers, usually follow fault lines, so our almost all of our nuclear generators sit atop of fault lines! And they tell us they’re intelligent ….. and they’re on top of this; the only thing they’re on top of is the money ……
Will the nuclear cores (potentially heating to 5,000 degrees) melt through the core of the earth and spew back the radioactivity? Or, like Japan, will they be flooded with water to leach the radioactivity into our rivers and oceans?
Bottom line, …… Obama’s planning on building scores of new nuclear plants.
30+ year ago, on a tour of San Onofre Nuclear Generating system – the tour leader answered my question with a lie, (he’d told the audience that there was no fault line under the generator), I pulled a map of active fault-lines out of my backpack and asked the people if they’d like to see where the Rose Canyon Fault line is, on the map ….. that the auditorium we were sitting in was atop of the active fault line.
With that, he called security and as people gathered around, I was “escorted” from the facility and told not to come back – nor to any other nuclear facility!
It’s not unreasonable to suspect that: BOILING WATER WITH NUCLEAR POWER IS OVERKILL!
