If you ever want employment, you’d better keep your mouth shut ….. and obviously, ….. best you not publish anything, at least nothing controversial!
It’s not Big Brother …. not yet. Indirectly, it is Big Brother, who should be protecting you. They’re not! This should be considered a privacy issue.
Minutes ago, Fox News just announced that there’s a new practice becoming “SOP” Standard Operating Procedure in the workplace – – – potential employers are requiring of applicants, the URL and passwords to any Blogs, Facebook accounts, tweets, etc. which you’ve published online. To refuse, will eliminate your being considered.
Current employers are sure to soon follow this SOP.
Actually, when it comes down to it, it is a complex issue. Proponents obviously, believe it helps them to not inadvertently hire the unstable, the too-politically-passionate, the big mouth, the potential troublemaker.
In a way, it also makes sense for an employer to seek to intimately know his employees; …. you know; the way it was, long ago, in years gone by – when times were different, when employers were more involved in the lives of employees ….. In fact, certain trades only hired people they knew well. Customers expected that of …. locksmiths, for instance.
What employer would want to hire a bigot in a multi-racial, multi-cultural workplace?
Still, in this “age of corporatism” this procedure is tantamount to, and sure to be used as, a replacement for a sort of psychological examination.
But, …. imagine what will happen when foreign nationals begin to buy up all of America’s businesses! If, in the future, you want to be able to provide for your loved ones, ….. again, you’d better demand the government make an amendment to the constitution that this practice of demanding your inner thoughts private! Providing, is required by the family man. How would our founding fathers approach this issue?
Demanding this information is already happening and will obviously continue as foreign entrepeneurs, flush with US cash, wanting to invest their money and have no alternative but to collect what they’re owed, by purchasing America’s land, homes, and businesses …... another issue entirely!
