Even more than these creeps, it’s also the judges who don’t give appropriate penalties to the perps! A little creative thinking can go a long way to making sure those who’ve been raised w/o the proper values, learn them soon, and permanently! Car thefts in Lane county are totally out of control. Some of the areas where they formerly drove them into the rivers, lakes, ponds, have been closed off …..
The judges do not take into account, …. along with the consideration of the cost, the stress, the inconvenience, caused by these amoral creeps, which steal!
Number one, the extra costs to the family ought to be paid back to the victims.
Re: The Bait Car Task Force planting these cars where thieves are likely to grab them, catching them, sending them to jail, are all doing their job and they’re to be commended for that; it’s the judges that are derelict in their duty! They ought to come up for review every few cases!
Thieves not only need to spend time in jail. The first few days need to be spent in solitary confinement where they have no one to talk to, no TV to watch, nothing to read, nothing to do, but think about what they’ve done that got them into this position!
Then, …. just before they’re released, they need to spend another few days in isolation (solitary confinement) to think about what they’ll do next time they’re tempted.
And it ought to cost the perp more than dearly! They ought to have to work the cost off, double or triple and that includes the time they were housed and fed by the state, county, or city …. along with reimbursing the victim.
Yes; if you guessed that my car was stolen, you’re correct, but it was my work van which was stolen, so they also put me out of work. By the time it was recovered, repaired, tools and inventory replace and put back where it belonged, …. and the customers I lost because I couldn’t serve them.
All-in-all, it probably cost me ½ again what I estimated. I know it cost me $7,000 – when all was figured in, I probably lost around $10,000. One of the perp’s parents paid me back $500.00 which they didn’t have to; he was an “adult” and living on his own. Before he was sentenced, he’d stolen over 80 vehicles that they knew of.
Usually, when he was picked up, he was not kept in jail until ….. one time, upon his release, Travis walked out of jail, crossed the street, and stole the personal SUV of the spokesperson for the Eugene Police Department.
That got their attention! ABOUT TIME! That time, they didn’t let him go so quickly! That’s Eugene, Oregon for you – liberal to the core, …. until it hits home!!!!!
Few, if any of those who were complicit, were punished. The Eugene PD wasn’t even going to respond until I explained a few things to them.
My checkbook and phone were in my van and the bank also lost close to $4,500. That’s passed onto customers – which is you if you have a bank account.
The young girl who worked at Dairy Mart and cashed a number of my checks for Travis was never punished, nor did they even bother to fire her. My costs, as I think back on the incident a dozen years ago, just keep piling up.
The perp paid me nothing! My insurance paid me $1,100 – it was a major loss for a struggling small businessman who worked long hours to try and serve customers and build toward hiring another.
It’s not the perps who learn from having to work for the city performing a service, that just gets them outdoors; they learn much better from the loss of freedom; it’s all their friends, and family who suffer along with them.
Penalties need to be sufficient to teach them a sincere lesson. And the perps? They need to hear from every person in the victim’s family who was impacted in any way. A viable society cannot keep slapping the wrist of the perps and letting them go!
I have no idea what’s happened to Travis Saltz; hopefully he’s not gone back to using meth ….. hopefully, he’s learned. Still I can’t help but wish periodically, …. maybe even learned the hard way — by having it happen to him!
Then there’s the story about my brand new 64 Chev. Impala Super Sport – 327ci, 4 speed, loaded with lots of extras …… These creep perps stripped even the windows, handles, …. even the brake shoes! I’d taken an extra job to have a ‘hot car’ …… It doesn’t help much to know that ‘what goes around …… comes around. ‘ The Muslim practice of cutting off the hand is probably too harsh a response, but it sure would help to know who to watch out for! Maybe a finger each time?
