Six complainants (now grown) want the files …… They filed suit over abuses when they were Boy Scouts. Twenty years ago, at a previous trial, hundreds of these files were released by a lower court and were found to detail child abuse.
It’s not the Catholic Church who doesn’t want their Priests and Bishops exposed. This time, according to an Associated Press story, it’s High Tech perverts, the Boy Scouts of America, another organization, and the Mormon Church.
Some of the big names in technology, members of TechAmerica, (allegedly including Boeing, IBM, Qwest, General Electric, Texas Instruments, and Microsoft) don’t want this information disclosed.
Their supposed reason? The Association’s “brief” (to the Oregon Supreme Court) claims their members’ trade secrets would be at risk.
The victims of molestation want the information. The Boy Scouts, charged with being the offending organization is fighting the disclosure.
One particular complainant who filed a separate suit 20 years ago, won about $20 million in damages and punitive awards from the Boy Scouts, the Cascade Pacific Council, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
At that (previous) trial, 1,247 files were released by a lower court–more than 1,000 of which detailed child abuse. Both victims and press organizations have sought the remaining files.
Now the state’s Supreme Court will have its say.
The final line in the AP story, seems very concise and appropriate:
“But when a company’s interests become suddenly aligned with those of pedophiles, perverts, and the people who keep their actions secret, things can admittedly get a little embarrassing.”
