My representative, Oregon’s Peter DeFazio, is home in his district, but ….. instead of meeting his constituency, face to face, …. eye to eye, as he’s always done in the past, …… this time ….. the political flames have heated up; the tar-balls and the dead birds of the Gulf may be put to good use in the south but Tar and Feathering here in Oregon? Not likely.
Though a progressive, local people have not only voted Peter back into office, they’ve respected a number of things about him, especially his connectedness to his home. He has been very responsive to his constituency, ….. until now, that is.
I just got a call from one of his volunteers – she wanted me to know that I could write Peter in.
“Write him in?”, I cut her off, questioningly.
“Yes, you could write him in; you’re registered as an Independent, right?” About this time, I’m beginning to smile; I’m getting the picture. Art Robinson’s a registered Independent, Peter’s opponent, and Peter’s running scared! Peter wants the Independent nomination as well.
The word is out; Peter’s not the only one; incumbents are running scared!
Peter shouldn’t have to be running scared though …. Peter’s home, is an isolated enclave of radical leftists – solidly democrat – Eugene and Springfield, Oregon. Yet, Peter too, sees the writing on the wall …..
Should incumbents like Peter worry? They’re all aware of the massive impending backlash! “But Peter?” This time, Art Robinson is running against Peter, and Art is a Tea Party member! The volunteer called Art an extremist conservative.
Instead of holding regular Town Meetings, across his district, this time home, Peter’s holding a Teletown Hall … a “Conference-Call-Town-Meeting” ….. it’s a change indicative of the fact that they’re all feeling the heat of last election’s confrontations.
This time, those like Peter are not quite sure but they’re hoping that “Obama’s coat-tails will be worth-while holding onto ….. that Obama’s “run-toward-the-center” will salvage their jobs ….. not that they’re concerned about anyone else’s …..
Oops; I guess, my cynicism is showing …..
